A/C, Home Efficiency, Insulation, Saving Electricity

Yes, summer is officially here. With long days of summer and the triple digit temperatures Dallas has been seeing comes higher electric bills. There are several things you can do to beat the heat without breaking the bank.

If your home is under insulated, your A/C will work harder and cool less. Increasing your attic insulation will help keep the cool air in and the hot air out. Consider adding bulk insulation or an attic door barrier, which seals the entrance off.

Make sure your air filters are clean, and replace as necessary. Around your unit, Make sure landscaping isn’t blocking your unit, restricting air flow and capacity. At least 6 inches away is a good rule.

Check your weathering stripping and caulking in and around your home. If you can feel hot air entering around a door or window, it needs additional stripping. Just like insulation, weather stripping can make a huge difference on how your A/C unit performs.

Try to use major appliances during off peak hours, in the early morning or late night. Your A/C won’t be battling against the sun’s heat and will use less energy. Check with your electric company to see if they provide a reduced rate during these hours.
Small appliances like TVs, computers and lighting generate more heat than you probably realize. Turning them off when you leave the room will help you stay cool and save you money on your bill.
