Dallas On Film

Oscar nominations are out and everyone is buzzing about who will take Oscar home. Among the top picks are “American Hustle”, “Nebraska”, “Gravity” and “The Wolf of Wall Street”. Despite the name, “Dallas Buyers Club” was filmed in New Orleans. Here are a few films that have actually been filmed in town.

Though RoboCop is set in Detroit, a ton of iconic buildings from Dallas’ past make appearances in this iconic 80s film including City Hall and the Dallas Municipal Building. According to IMDB, the police station scenes were filmed in what is currently Sons of Herman Hall near Deep Ellum. Plaza of the Americas, Reunion Tower and the Dallas Public Library are also noted film sites.

Al Pacino coached the Dallas Knights on the sidelines of Texas Stadium in “Any Given Sunday”. Texas Stadium was located in Irving and was structurally most famous for its partial roof. The Dallas Cowboys last played here on December 20, 2008 and began the 2009 NFL season at Cowboys Stadium (now AT&T Stadium). Texas Stadium was demolished on April 11, 2010.

One movie that has somewhat slipped under the radar is Bottle Rocket, starring locals Luke and Owen Wilson. This Wes Anderson film was filmed in Texas and California and is dubbed a crime and comedy. Notable filming locations include a home at 9400 Rockbrook Drive in Dallas, NorthPark Mall, Hinckley Cold Storage (now Texas Ice House), and St. Mark’s School of Texas, where the Wilson brothers actually attended school.

It’s always fun to see places you frequent in great films. Here’s to promoting the city we love!
