Happy Earth Day! As an Energy Star partner since 2006, Grand Homes has dedicated itself over the recent years to create homes that not only improve the lives of our customers, but our planet. Because of our efforts in protecting the environment and promoting energy efficient construction, the EPA recognized Grand Homes in 2009 and 2011 with the Energy Star Leadership in Housing Award. We have worked hard to constantly be improving our materials, processes and standards to build something that is energy efficient and safe.
So what does it mean to be an Energy Star partner, or to build an energy efficient home? To earn the ENERGY STAR, a home must meet strict guidelines for energy efficiency set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These homes are at least 15% more energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC), and include additional energy-saving features that typically make them 20–30% more efficient than standard homes. When you purchase a Grand Home in it’s early phases you have the opportunity to customize any thing from stone/brick and cabinetry to flooring and color schemes. This is one of the services that makes buying one of our homes truly unique, and it’s one of our customers’ favorite parts of the home-buying process. Because the Design Studio appointment is such a valued experience for both our customers and us, we decided to find out more about it.
We recently made a visit to our Design Studio to talk to some of our Consultants about what finishes and features our customers were selecting. With the plethora of options to choose from, we wanted to know what was most popular among granite and tile, wood and carpet and so on. What did we discover? Our customers have great taste! Here is a little recap of our findings. (more…)
These days, most of us are trying to be more eco-concious. Whether it’s recycling paper or conserving water we have tried to find small ways to decrease our impact on the planet, and we want our houses to do the same.
If you have been shopping for green homes in Dallas you have probably noticed a dramatic increase in energy-efficient options over the last couple years. Customers buying new homes in Dallas, and across the country, are becoming more environmentally savvy, and builders are making an effort to keep up with the times, creating both traditional and custom homes Dallas residents can be confident are energy-efficient and environmentally sound. So what features should you be looking for when shopping for your next energy-efficient home?
- Look for Energy Star Compliance. Appliances, light fixtures and other electronic devices should be Energy Star compliant, and so should the building materials.
- HVAC Systems. A non-ozone depleting HVAC system is good for the environment, your family, and your budget. A good HVAC system will be 16 SEER or higher.
- Superior Insulation. Green homes must be insulated in a way that keeps them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. R-22 wall insulation(R-19 Batts with R-3 Sheathing) does just that, and R-38 blown fiberglass insulation fills in the gaps and insulates the attic.
- Radiant Barrier Roof Decking . A radiant barrier roof can deflect up to ninety-seven percent of the sun’s rays, lowering attic temperatures by about thirty degrees.
- Energy-Efficient Windows. Super efficient, low-E, double paned, insulated vinyl windows are a must for green homes, because they use improved frames and protective coatings to reduce air infiltration and radiant heat flow. Windows should let in light, not heat.
- Tankless Water Heater. Tankless hot water heaters can save you up to forty percent on your energy costs, while providing you with exactly as much hot water as you need, reducing wasted energy used when heating large amounts of water.
- Digital Programmable Thermostats. Save money with the touch of a button by setting your thermostat based on your heating and cooling needs. You can save over thirty percent on your utility bills.
When it comes to custom homes, Grand Homes is a company with a longstanding reputation for excellence. With over twenty-five years of experience building new homes in Dallas-Fort Worth, Grand Homes is well versed in how to build energy efficient, eco-conscious homes. Stephen Brooks, CEO and President of Grand Homes, Inc., was honored with the prestigious 2012 Hugh Prather Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Dallas Builders Association.
The award has been presented for the past 60 years to the builder, remodeler or developer member who has done the most for the betterment of his community, as well as being a good citizen who has worked to help others.
This award is named for the Homebuilders Association’s first President, Hugh Prather, in hopes that his principles would serve as a guide for future generations of builders. It is not to be simply a “Builder of the Year,” but something more that reflects credit to the building industry. Past recipients include outstanding individuals such as Dave Fox, W. W. Caruth, Jr., Robert Folsom, Fred Roach, Kent Conine, Hershel Pierce, Kenny Marchant, Tommy Ford and Harold Pollman, among others. This group of thoughtful individuals believed that not only was it natural to try to be successful in your business and deliver the best possible product to your customers, but to also go beyond the expected and try in special ways to better the lot of his fellow man. Grand Homes and about 50 Subcontractors are building a home in Little Elm that will raise $200,000 for a charity that provides small loans for entrepreneurs in 12 of the world’s poorest countries.
Stephen Brooks started Grand Homes with a loan from a lumber company.”They gave me a hand up, not a hand out,” says Brooks, the CEO of the large Texas homebuilder.
So it just seemed like paying it forward when Grand Homes and about 50 subcontractors joined forces to build a home that, when sold, will raise about $200,000 for HOPE International. This charity provides small loans to entrepreneurs in a dozen of the world’s poorest countries. (more…)
U.S. homebuilders are an attractive investment as the housing market starts a “strong” recovery that may drive a surge in new-home sales, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) said in a report.
Housing has a “long list of positives,” including rising prices, job growth, supportive government policies and a decline in the so-called shadow inventory of homes, Goldman Sachs analysts Joshua Pollard and Anto Savarirajan wrote in a note to clients. They raised their rating on the homebuilding industry to attractive from neutral. (more…)
