America's Best Builder, Energy Efficient, Energy Star, Grand Homes, New Homes Dallas

These days, most of us are trying to be more eco-concious. Whether it’s recycling paper or conserving water we have tried to find small ways to decrease our impact on the planet, and we want our houses to do the same.

If you have been shopping for green homes in Dallas you have probably noticed a dramatic increase in energy-efficient options over the last couple years. Customers buying new homes in Dallas, and across the country, are becoming more environmentally savvy, and builders are making an effort to keep up with the times, creating both traditional and custom homes Dallas residents can be confident are energy-efficient and environmentally sound. So what features should you be looking for when shopping for your next energy-efficient home?

  • Look for Energy Star Compliance. Appliances, light fixtures and other electronic devices should be Energy Star compliant, and so should the building materials.
  • HVAC Systems. A non-ozone depleting HVAC system is good for the environment, your family, and your budget. A good HVAC system will be 16 SEER or higher.
  • Superior Insulation. Green homes must be insulated in a way that keeps them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. R-22 wall insulation(R-19 Batts with R-3 Sheathing) does just that, and R-38 blown fiberglass insulation fills in the gaps and insulates the attic.
  • Radiant Barrier Roof Decking . A radiant barrier roof can deflect up to ninety-seven percent of the sun’s rays, lowering attic temperatures by about thirty degrees.
  • Energy-Efficient Windows. Super efficient, low-E, double paned, insulated vinyl windows are a must for green homes, because they use improved frames and protective coatings to reduce air infiltration and radiant heat flow. Windows should let in light, not heat.
  • Tankless Water Heater. Tankless hot water heaters can save you up to forty percent on your energy costs, while providing you with exactly as much hot water as you need, reducing wasted energy used when heating large amounts of water.
  • Digital Programmable Thermostats. Save money with the touch of a button by setting your thermostat based on your heating and cooling needs. You can save over thirty percent on your utility bills.

October 4, 2012

Stephen Brooks, CEO and President of Grand Homes, Inc., was honored with the prestigious 2012 Hugh Prather Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Dallas Builders Association.

The award has been presented for the past 60 years to the builder, remodeler or developer member who has done the most for the betterment of his community, as well as being a good citizen who has worked to help others.

This award is named for the Homebuilders Association’s first President, Hugh Prather, in hopes that his principles would serve as a guide for future generations of builders. It is not to be simply a “Builder of the Year,” but something more that reflects credit to the building industry. Past recipients include outstanding individuals such as Dave Fox, W. W. Caruth, Jr., Robert Folsom, Fred Roach, Kent Conine, Hershel Pierce, Kenny Marchant, Tommy Ford and Harold Pollman, among others. This group of thoughtful individuals believed that not only was it natural to try to be successful in your business and deliver the best possible product to your customers, but to also go beyond the expected and try in special ways to better the lot of his fellow man. House FrameHave you been thinking about building your dream home, but for one reason or another you haven’t been able start the process? Well there is no better time than the present!

Recent news around the construction industry has indicated that the cost of construction materials is on the rise. And, while interest rates are at an all time low there really is no better time to build a home.

The building materials component in the Producer Price Index released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics rose almost 2 percent year-over-year in July, and builders are already starting to see their costs rise for construction essentials such as gypsum, lumber, and insulation.

Lumber prices have gone up 40% over the last two years are predicted to climb further next year; concrete and asphalt prices are also on the rise. Lumber, concrete, and asphalt are among the main components of construction materials. Drywall costs are also promising increases in the near future; the jump is anticipated to be 25% – 30% by leading suppliers.

How does this news impact you, as you contemplate building a new custom home? It is simple: construction costs are on the rise, but the interest rates are low. Now is your chance to lock in current pricing, capture a low interest rate, and head into 2013 anticipating living in what you love – a brand-new, custom home, designed specifically for you and your family!
