Grand Homes’ Fifth Home for Hope!

DSCN1316We broke ground on Grand Homes’ fifth Home for Hope! Neighbors, trade partners, Grand Homes employees and more gathered at Chadwick Farms in Fort Worth this week for the groundbreaking ceremony. We had a full tent for this inspiring and rewarding celebration.

During the presentation, Stephen Brooks, President and CEO of Grand Homes, Jack Nulty, Executive Director of Homes for Hope, Beau Brooks, Vice President of Grand Homes, Paul Evans of BMC West and Tim Wilson of Stair Solutions each gave touching, personal accounts of their experience with Homes for Hope.

DSCN1417Each Home for Hope is built with donated or discounted labor and materials in order to increase the profit made on the home. The home is put on the market as any other Grand Home would be. The profit from the sale is donated to Hope International, the parent company of Homes for Hope, who then turn the donation into microloans for entrepreneurs in impoverished countries so they may start or expand their small businesses. This enables them to earn a steady income to support their families and eventually rise out of poverty.

What is most impressive about this program is how it doesn’t just fund someone once and when that money is gone, it’s gone. It actually helps people build on top of that initial donation in order to make a better life for themselves and those around them.

DSCN1412If you or someone you know is looking for a home in a fantastic community with great neighbors, please share this information with them. The Hope Home will be an Abernathy floor plan and additional information can be found by calling our Chadwick Farms sales office at 682-237-7515. Construction is about to begin so if you would like to be a part of the building process, time is limited! Call today!

This was our biggest turnout yet and we look forward to an even bigger response for our sixth Hope Home! Click Here for more information on Homes for Hope!

Never a Dull Moment in DFW

One thing I LOVE about DFW is that there is always something to do. Concerts, art shows, festivals, film screenings, sporting events, the list goes on. Whatever your interests are there is sure to be something going on that will appeal to you. Take this weekend for example, there are four huge events happening throughout the metroplex and they’re all so different! There’s something for everyone to enjoy in DFW.

dallascomiconSouth: Dallas Comic Con
Coo coo for Comics? Dallas Comic Con will run from May 16 – 18 at the Dallas Convention Center in gorgeous downtown. Big names who will be on hand for autographs include Alice Cooper, Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger), William Shatner, Stan Lee and Christopher Lloyd among others. Take part in the cosplay red carpet, shop at over 600 vendor booths or participate in various workshops and seminars. Even sitting on a bench for the day will be entertaining as there are sure to be hundreds of cosplayers walking around dressed as their favorite characters.

fork-and-corkCentral: Fork and Cork
One of Addison’s big events is happening this weekend in Addison Circle. Hobnob with fellow foodies at this huge sampling event. Over 30 local restaurants will be represented and attendees will have the option to sample import and craft beers, wine and spirits in the Grand Tasting Area. But it’s not all about food and drink: there will be entertainment too! Pat Green is headlining the event and will be preceded by local acts Telegraph Canyon, the Dallas String Quartet, The O’s and more. This is a strictly 21 and older event; however the Tasty Run 5K that coincides with the event is open to all ages.

msdWest: Main Street Days
Craft beer is all the rage in DFW and that is this year’s theme at this event in Grapevine. The 30th Annual Main Street Days will feature six stages for live music, a carnival, vendors, children’s area and, of course, food will be on hand so bring the entire family for a day of fun. The best part? Admission is FREE if you arrive before 5 p.m today!

fort-worth-music-festival-2014Far West: FW Music Festival
Lucinda Williams and Jimmy Eat World headline this two-day music festival in Fort Worth. In an attempt to change people’s perspective that Ft. Worth is a rustic, old west town the fest will feature twenty Indie Pop, Rock, Rhythm & Blues and Alternative Country bands. Acts who have played here in previous years include Lucero, Reverend Horton Heat, he Old 97’s and The Relatives. If you do plan to attend this festival and are looking to continue the party elsewhere (headliner’s sets will be over at 11 p.m.), we suggest heading to Sundance Square in downtown.

wildflowerUp North: Wildflower Festival
Is the drive to Fort Worth too long? Bring the kids to the Wildflower festival in Richardson. This award-winning festival will host a Kidz Corner, marketplace, Taste of Texas Food Garden and more! Six stages will hold non-stop live music throughout the festival with headliners performing after 7 p.m. Le Freak will take the stage tonight, as will Vertical Horizon and Kool & the Gang. The Wallflowers, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and Cheap Trick perform Saturday night and Jack Ingram and Lonestar close out the festival on Sunday.

BIG News for Plano

Posted on 2nd May 2014 by Grand_Homes in Dallas Real Estate

dmnEveryone is buzzing about Toyota’s latest news: they’re relocating their headquarters from Torrence, California to Plano! We’d like to share this opinion article from the Dallas Morning News.

“Toyota sent shock waves through Southern California when it announced that it’s moving its North American sales headquarters from Torrance, south of Los Angeles, to Plano. The move, which is part of a broader headquarters consolidation, will cost the city of Torrance about $1.2 million in annual tax revenue and affects about 3,000 employees.

Employees who relocate are in for a surprise. Contrary to the image promulgated by both critics and boosters, Texas is not an alien planet populated by barbarians with big hair.

With its cheap suburban housing and good public schools, Plano in fact offers a 21st-century version of the middle-class California dream that built towns like Torrance. It’s just been updated, with more immigrants, better restaurants and a lot more marble countertops.

In contrasting Texas and California, politicians and pundits tend to emphasize taxes and business regulation. But for most people on a day-to-day basis, the biggest difference between the two is the cost of housing.

Although Plano is one of the country’s richest cities, with a highly educated population and a median income of $85,333 compared with Torrance’s $70,061, it offers a much wider range of housing options. You can pay nearly $7 million for a 5-acre estate in Plano — $3 million more than the most expensive listing in Torrance — but the average home costs less than $200,000, compared with $552,000 in Torrance.

A Redfin search for three-bedroom houses costing less than $400,000 turns up 149 in Plano vs. four in Torrance; lowering the threshold to $300,000 cuts the Plano supply to 73, while yielding nothing in Torrance.

Plano’s combination of inexpensive real estate and excellent public schools has cultural consequences. It allows for more traditional lifestyles, since many families don’t need a second income to live a comfortable middle-class life.

Many mothers choose to stay at home or to work, often part time, for personal fulfillment and luxuries such as family vacations. For both men and women, a life oriented around work rather than family is less common than in coastal enclaves of similarly highly educated people.

What confuses coastal elites is that Plano is simultaneously cosmopolitan and traditional. Its residents travel widely, work with colleagues from all over the world, and keep up with books and movies. They also go to church, vote for candidates who keep taxes low, and structure their lives around what’s good for the kids.

Not so long ago, Plano came to symbolize the fast-growing territories of Red America. As Plano goes, perhaps, so goes the nation. It’s the quintessential “boomburg” and the new Peoria: the touchstone Middle American town, a bellwether for retailers and culture watchers alike.

Plano is genuinely conservative, but the real question is, What does conservative mean in Plano?

Conservative, it turns out, is not the opposite of yuppie (or former yuppie). Someone with a six-figure income, an advanced degree, a fancy car, a taste for aged balsamic vinegar, and some openly gay colleagues or neighbors is not necessarily a liberal or even the work-centered bourgeois Bohemian of David Brooks’ Bobos in Paradise.

Plano will undoubtedly turn off some Toyota transplants. The conversational assumption that everyone belongs to a religious congregation of some kind — if not Christian, then Jewish, Muslim, Hindu or Buddhist — will create culture shock.

But a lot of people will discover that they can have a lifestyle they thought was a vanished American dream. As long as that’s true, companies are going to keep moving to Texas.”
