The holiday season in some places is great for seeing snow and winter wildlife. However, in the DFW, snow is pretty rare. So, if you really want to get into the Christmas spirit while walking around the eleven counties, you need to be looking for the best Christmas lights.
Deerfield Neighborhood, Plano
If you’re looking for a real winter wonderland to drive or walk through, the Deerfield Neighborhood is it. They have a hotly contested decorating competition every year that results in some dazzling displays. You can even book a carriage ride!
There is an official event which runs from 7 – 10 pm on weekdays and 7 – 11 pm on weekends. However, most homes turn on their lights at sunset, and the residents are happy for you to walk or drive through outside of these hours.
Timberhollow Circle, Lake Highlands
This street has had a “12 days of Christmas” tradition for over two decades. Homes are decorated themed around the 12 days of Christmas, from the 12 drummers right down to the partridge in a pear tree. Although some residents have left the area over the years, they have passed on the decorations to new owners who have kept the tradition alive. The lights will be on until 11 pm.
A bonus feature if you are driving through with your radio on can be found if you tune to 87.7 FM, where you can hear different versions of “The 12 Days of Christmas.
Also, while you’re in the neighborhood, be sure to check out Lake Highlands Estates, where you can see trees beautifully decked out for the season.
Diamond Loch, North Richland Hills
This North Richland Hills neighborhood has had a fantastic seasonal display for decades. If you drive through the cul-de-sac slowly, you will see that adjacent houses have joined forces to present a huge computerized show. The remainder of the street decorates to make a fabulous enchanted “Whoville” Christmas experience. The show gets bigger every year, and occasionally you may even spot the Grinch himself. This display is open daily from 5:30 pm -11 pm.
A neighborhood tradition was begun here when local resident Dave Kulesz lit up his home with thousands of festive lights. The tradition has spread over the decades across the neighborhood, and now the annual display is quite spectacular.
Mr. Kulesz still takes part and uses the festive display to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s, a disease that took his mother. His lights are switched on nightly from 5:45 pm until 11 pm, and you can find his house on Rushing Meadow Court.
The Park Cities
The Park cities neighborhood is full of gorgeous houses that shine brightly with fabulous Christmas displays. Many of these are professionally installed, and you can choose virtually any street in the neighborhood to see the very best in seasonal decoration.
While you are there, it’s a must to see Highland Park Village with its 1.5 million lights. You should also visit SMU and travel down Bishop Boulevard toward the fountain for more superb displays.
