5 Tips for Streamlining your Moving Journey

Moving can be an overwhelming experience. Along with packing your things and hiring a moving company, you’ll have to deal with the stress of worrying whether your belongings will arrive at your new home in one piece. Moving is a challenging thing to do, but there are ways to make the process smoother.

Plan Ahead

Preparing for your move will help to ensure that everything goes according to plan. Give yourself plenty of time to sort through your belongings and decide what you want to take with you and what to leave behind. Create an inventory of the items you’ll carry with you, so you remember everything. Things to put on your checklist include:

  • The moving company’s contact information
  • A list of items you’ll be taking with you
  • Have the necessary moving supplies
  • Any task you don’t want to forget to do

If there are items you won’t be taking with you, consider holding a garage sale or donating them to a local charity. Getting rid of unnecessary items will lighten your load, make packing a breeze and help to offset the cost of your move.

Pack Smart

Be strategic and make your move easier. Purchase or rent packing boxes that are sturdy and strong enough to protect your belongings during the move. Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs in.

Use smaller boxes for heavier objects and larger ones for lighter items to make it easier for you and the movers to carry the boxes. Wrap breakables in bubble wrap, place them in the middle of the box and fill any empty spaces with crumpled paper to prevent your items from shifting during the move. Finally, pack an essentials box with the things you’ll need to get you through the first few days in your new home. This box should include items such as

  • Toiletries
  • A change of clothes
  • Medications
  • Bedding
  • Towels
  • Snacks and non-perishable food items

Pack this box last so you can easily access it when you arrive at your new home.

Change Your Address

Remember to change your address with the post office and update your contact information with your friends and family. You can change your address online or by visiting your local post office. Do this a few weeks before your move to give USPS adequate time to send you the Move Validation Letter before the trucks arrive.

You should also update your contact information with your friends and family. Send out a mass email or text letting them know your new address.

Schedule Utilities for Your New Place

You don’t want to arrive at your new home only to find that the electricity and water are off. So call your utility provider a few weeks before your move to schedule the start date for your service. At the same time, request service stops for your old home.

Hire a Professional Moving Company

Trying to move is not only stressful, but it’s also very physically demanding. While the above tips will help you to streamline your move, hiring a professional will ensure it’s completed swiftly and your belongings are moved safely. A professional moving company will pack, disassemble, reassemble and unpack for you, and they’ll even bring packing materials and boxes to complete the job.

When choosing a moving company, however, do your research and choose a company you can trust. A licensed and insured company will provide peace of mind knowing your belongings are safe.
