How to Save on Holiday Home Prep

frugal, holiday tips, holidays, tips

“The summer heat is quickly fading, and before we know it, the leaves on the trees will start to turn. That means holiday season is just around the corner. If your family is anything like mine, holiday season is hectic season. From Halloween on, it will be a nonstop parade of people and activities all the way through to the New Year. Is your home ready for the change in seasons?

I’ll admit, I’m not quite ready yet. But, I have a plan that will save me money and hassle, and I’m happy to share it with you.

Clean:

Now is the perfect time to open up all the windows in the house, let in the cool, fresh air, and clean the place. It’s probably something I picked up from my mom, but we never touched any of the seasonal decorations until after the house had a thorough cleaning. Mind you, this is not your typical weekend cleaning, either. It involves moving the furniture around, brushing the baseboards and corners that usually get ignored and dealing with the dust bunnies living under beds and rugs. Your guests with allergies will appreciate your hard work.

Cleaning on this scale gives you a chance to think about how traffic flows through your rooms and opens opportunities to give each room a free makeover. It’s amazing what rearranging the furniture can do for a room that you’ve been living in for years. Fall cleaning also sets the stage for the pretty seasonal decorations that make this time of year so special. Plot, plan and imagine while you’re cleaning.

Take inventory:

Once you’re in cleaning mode, it’s much easier to motivate yourself to pull all of your seasonal décor out of storage and sort through it. Never shop for holiday decor without going through the holiday boxes first. You will avoid the impulse to buy things you already have and can plan ahead for the things you need to replace.

Don’t stop with just your fall and Halloween items. Go through Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year’s and even Valentine’s Day if you have it. Making your way through all of it early will help you to see how to repurpose and use seasonal items in ways you’ve never used them before. Refreshing your memory early also sets you up for the next step.

Swap:

Admit it; you have a couple of friends or family members that have a few seasonal pieces you totally adore. If you get the jump on cleaning and inventory, you have the opportunity to organize a seasonal swap. Don’t limit the swap to just the strictly seasonal stuff. This is a chance for all of you to rethink pillows, throws, lamps, art, rugs and guest bedding. Exchanging just a few key pieces could be all it takes to reinvigorate a room without spending a dime.

Returning the swap at the end of the season becomes the reminder to take advantage of the post-holiday markdowns. You’ll get up to 80 percent off brand new seasonal items and the fun of unpacking those goodies when you do the inventory dive next year.

Make small changes:

Now that you’ve gotten your seasonal stuff sorted, take a look around the house for opportunities to make small changes. Rather than repaint the whole room, what about repainting the trim or adding a contrasting feature wall? As you start to think about how your rooms function for guests, you may find there are little things that need to be repaired or updated. Don’t turn it into a big make-over. Keep the projects small and you’ll accomplish them quickly without a big expenditure of time or money.

Do little things:

What little details will make out-of-town guests feel most welcome in your home? The little things make all the difference, and they usually require more thought than money. Take a trip to the dollar store to stock up on tissues, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, conditioner and all of the other little sundries that you would find in a well-appointed hotel room. Planning ahead will save money and time running around for those last-minute things that are often forgotten when packing.

Seasonal fragrance is another little detail that can make a big impact. Don’t forget to evoke those memories of grandma’s homemade pies and cookies. Spending $5 to $10 on candles, scented oils or potpourri can makeover a space even when you don’t have a budget for lots of decorations.

Knowledge is power when it comes to decking the halls and saving money. Now that you have the holiday entertaining basics covered, you can keep an eagle eye out for the amazing deals on seasonal items yet to come.”

It’s no secret that Grand Homes are designed to bring people together and what better way than at the dinner table! Thanksgiving is less than three weeks away so we’d like to share some of our favorite dining rooms and kitchens.

kitchenCheck out this gorgeous kitchen at our Graham Ranch model (which happens to be for sale!) in North Richland Hills. Our favorite part about this kitchen is that massive island/breakfast bar. Beautiful cabinets, a stunning backsplash and the stainless steel appliances are included! This home also features a wine cellar which we think is pretty spectacular in itself.

McCreary-Kitchen-800x514x72Another kitchen we love is at our McCreary Creek model in Parker. Storage, storage, storage! This kitchen is flooded with cabinet space, beautiful flooring that contrasts perfectly with the creamy cabinet color, a gas stovetop and more stainless steel appliances. Our kitchens aren’t only fabulous, but they’re functional as well! This Hamptons floorplan is very open and allows for easy transition from the kitchen to the dining area and into the family room. This is ideal for having guests over so chef can mingle as much as the guests.

Newton-Dining-800x522x72Newton-Kitchen-800x617x72The Grand Ashford at Newton Ranch (and most of our floorplans) offer dining options! Here, you can choose to dine in the casual dining area right off the kitchen, in the formal dining room or both! The best part is that you get to pick the plan that works for you!

McCreary-Family2-800x589x72The holidays are coming! Are you prepared? If you are a Grand Home owner you have nothing to fear! Spacious, open floor plan designs, multiple dining and living areas and gorgeous, functional kitchens are just some of the fantastic features in your new home.

Every year it seems more people show up to family gatherings. Embrace your new guests as there is plenty of space for them to celebrate the holiday season in your home. Family and friends can enjoy a nice chat in the open living room, watch a movie in the upstairs media room or play a round of pool in the gameroom. Visitors will feel right at home in your guest suite if they plan to spend the night after a night of holiday cocktails.

kitchenxxStuck on cooking duty? You won’t miss any of the action with our open floor plans that conjoin the kitchen and living area. Cooking will be a breeze with built-in appliances, a huge island, lots of storage space and beautiful granite countertops.

IMG_0465 xOne less thing to worry about: your energy bill! Don’t stress about turning up the a/c to offset the oven heat because the entire home is Energy Star certified! Our homes must meet strict guidelines for energy efficiency set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that require an integrated approach to design combined with tried-and-true best building practices. Upon completion, each home must undergo third-party inspection of energy performance to guarantee that it is at least 30% more efficient than typical new homes built today.

Need to move in before the end of the year? We have plenty of homes that are ready for you now! Have a little more time and want to be a part of the building process? We can do that too! Visit GrandHomes.com today to pick out your favorite community and floor plan.

Grand Gives Back

Chadwick Farms, DFW Real Estate, Frisco Hills, Grand Homes, Homes for HOPE, HOPE Home, Little Elm, new homes

DSC_1229Yesterday was a very exciting day here at Grand Homes. Not only was it the final day of Grand College sales training, but sales associates and office staff were able to come together for a very important cause. Special guests Jack Nulty, Executive Director at Homes for Hope, and Leah Rutt, the daughter of Hope International founder Jeff Rutt, joined Grand Homes for a check presentation.

During yesterday’s presentation, Ms. Rutt explained how her family would donate food and medical supplies in Ukraine before they decided they wanted to help in a way that would make a lasting difference. This is how HOPE International came to be.

Homes for HOPE is an arm of HOPE International that works with home builders to facilitate and encourage the construction of HOPE Homes. What makes HOPE Homes special is that the labor, materials and services are donated or discounted in order to increase profit. Profit from the sale then goes towards the provision of microloans to entrepreneurs in impoverished countries so they can start or expand their own small businesses. This enables business owners to earn a steady income to support their families and eventually rise out of poverty.

Eleva1The home sale that allowed Grand to make this donation was built in the Frisco Hills community in Little Elm. This is the fourth home Grand Homes has built with Homes for HOPE. Our fifth HOPE Home is currently under construction at Chadwick Farms in Fort Worth. For more information on our latest Home for Hope visit grandhomes.com or call our Chadwick Farms sales office at 682-237-7515.

Grand Homes is proud to be a part of this life changing opportunity and is extremely grateful for our amazing trade partners who helped make this effort possible. We could not have done it without them!
